OpenClaw Gateway Setup Guide

A practical baseline config for a stable gateway, with checks you can run in under 5 minutes.

Why this matters

Most gateway issues come from missing env variables, wrong ports, or startup order. This guide gives you a repeatable process to avoid those failures.

1) Verify environment

Terminal
openclaw --version
openclaw gateway status

2) Configure key settings

env (example)
OPENCLAW_TIMEZONE=Asia/Shanghai
OPENCLAW_GATEWAY_PORT=3000
OPENCLAW_LOG_LEVEL=info

3) Start gateway safely

Terminal
openclaw gateway start
openclaw gateway status

4) Validate core paths

  • Web UI opens correctly
  • Message channel receives and sends replies
  • Basic tool calls succeed (read, web_fetch, exec)

5) Troubleshooting quick map

  • No response: check gateway status and channel token
  • Intermittent response: review logs and model/API quota
  • Slow execution: inspect tool timeout and host resources

Avoid editing multiple variables at once. Change one item, verify, then continue.

Recommended runbook commands

Daily operations
# Check service
openclaw gateway status

# Restart when needed
openclaw gateway restart

# Stop gracefully
openclaw gateway stop

Done Criteria

Gateway status remains healthy after restart

At least one messaging channel tested end-to-end

Logs are readable and actionable for debugging
