OpenClaw Local Deployment Guide for Mac, Linux & Windows

Prerequisites

Hardware

• Mac, Linux, or Windows PC
• Preferably a machine without critical data

Software & Network

• Stable internet connection
• Node.js 22+, Git, Homebrew (auto-checked)

Important: OpenClaw has high system permissions. For maximum safety, use a dedicated machine or a virtual machine instead of your primary workstation.

Installation

Mac / Linux

The installer automatically checks for Node.js 22+, Git, and Homebrew (on Mac). Installation takes approximately 3-4 minutes.

Configuration

1Launch QuickStart

Terminal

openclaw onboard --flow quickstart

OpenClaw will display a safety disclaimer. Select Yes to proceed, then choose QuickStart.

2Choose Model & Enter API Key

Select a model provider and enter your API key.

Avoid

• Claude — 10M tokens/day is extremely expensive for agent-style usage

3Connect Chat Platform

Choose how you want to interact with OpenClaw:

You can select Skip for now and configure a chat platform later.

4Install Skills

Select Yes when prompted, choose npm as the package manager, then install these recommended starter skills:

5Configure Hooks

Select all three hooks for the best experience:

• boot-md — Load custom rules on each startup
• command-logger — Log conversations for debugging and review
• session-memory — Persist conversation state across sessions

6Launch OpenClaw

Click Open the Web UI to access the chat interface.

Pro tip: When output runs too long, use /stop → /compact → then restart with a more specific prompt.
