OpenClaw Local Deployment: Step-by-Step Setup Guide

Deploy OpenClaw on Mac, Linux, or Windows — from installation to first conversation

Prerequisites

Hardware

  • • Mac, Linux, or Windows PC
  • • Preferably a machine without critical data

Software & Network

  • • Stable internet connection
  • • Node.js 22+, Git, Homebrew (auto-checked)
Important: OpenClaw has high system permissions. For maximum safety, use a dedicated machine or a virtual machine instead of your primary workstation.

Installation

Mac / Linux

Terminal
curl -fsSL https://openclaw.ai/install.sh | bash

Windows (PowerShell)

PowerShell
iwr -useb https://openclaw.ai/install.ps1 | iex
The installer automatically checks for Node.js 22+, Git, and Homebrew (on Mac). Installation takes approximately 3-4 minutes.

Configuration

1Launch QuickStart

Terminal
openclaw onboard --flow quickstart

OpenClaw will display a safety disclaimer. Select Yes to proceed, then choose QuickStart.

2Choose Model & Enter API Key

Select a model provider and enter your API key.

Recommended

  • • MiniMax — cost-effective, generous quota
  • • Qwen — cost-effective alternative
  • • GPT Pro/Team — if budget allows

Avoid

  • • Claude — 10M tokens/day is extremely expensive for agent-style usage
Free Trial: OpenClaw and MiniMax offer a 7-day free coding plan. After completing the setup, run the following command to activate it:

Use Cases

OpenClaw's key advantage is breaking down barriers between different apps and services while leveraging full local system permissions. Here are some examples of what users have done:

Content Creation

  • • Generate images through chat
  • • Write YouTube scripts
  • • Summarize daily AI news

Automation

  • • Book restaurants automatically
  • • Monitor and collect information
  • • Manage files across applications
OpenClaw functions as an unrestricted version of Claude Code with full system access, making it capable of cross-application tasks that single-purpose tools cannot handle.

Safety Recommendations

OpenClaw has extensive system permissions. Taking precautions is strongly recommended before deployment.

Best: Use a virtual machine for complete isolation

Good: Use a VPS or cloud server

Acceptable: Use a dedicated secondary machine without important data

Not recommended: Installing directly on your primary workstation that contains important files, credentials, or sensitive data.

Summary

Cross-platform: Works on Mac, Linux, and Windows

Quick setup: From zero to working in under 10 minutes

Flexible chat: Connect via WhatsApp, Discord, or Feishu

Extensible: Hundreds of skills available to expand capabilities
